App Design

Trainline - Redesign

I redesigned the Trainline app to improve the booking experience and make travel planning faster, clearer, and more user-friendly.

Project Duration :

2 weeks

Problem

The original design presented train schedules and booking options in a dense way, making it difficult for users to quickly compare routes and manage their journeys. Navigation between core features like favourites, tickets, and account settings lacked clarity.

Goal / Success Metrics

  • Enhance usability with a cleaner interface for searching and booking trains.

  • Increase convenience with favourites and quick re-booking options.

  • Improve personalisation through clearer account and sustainability tracking.

  • Deliver a more modern and intuitive visual identity.

Primary Goals

  • Simplified Search & Booking: Redesigned search flow with easy access to live schedules, route options, and ticket classes.

  • Favourites & Reuse: Quick access to most-used routes for faster booking.

  • My Tickets Section: Cleaner ticket management with clear categorisation and booking history.

  • Personalisation: Profile and account settings redesigned to highlight user details, preferences, and sustainability impact.

Targeted User Persona

  • Name: James, 31

  • Profile: A daily commuter travelling between Greater Manchester and central stations, also using Trainline for occasional leisure trips.

  • Pain Points: Finds it frustrating to re-enter frequent routes and manage multiple tickets.

  • Needs: A simple, fast booking app with easy access to past journeys and saved routes.

Summary

The redesign delivers a streamlined, commuter-friendly experience. With a cleaner visual design, improved search flows, and greater focus on personalisation, the app ensures travellers can plan and manage journeys with confidence and ease.
